Former Dynamo Director Reflects on Maximilian Philipp Transfer Mishap

Roman Oreshchuk, the former sporting director of Dynamo Moscow, recently opened up about the unsuccessful transfer of Maximilian Philipp to the club. In a candid interview, Oreshchuk admitted that bringing Philipp to Dynamo was his “biggest mistake” as a sporting director.

Oreshchuk explained that proper due diligence is crucial when investing large sums in players. Despite initial reservations due to his friendship with Philipp’s agent, Gordon Stipic, Oreshchuk was pressured by club management to complete the transfer.

The former director revealed that Philipp, who had previously played for Borussia Dortmund, had also received offers from Hertha Berlin and Wolfsburg. However, Dynamo managed to outbid their competitors and convince the player to join after two visits to Moscow.

Unfortunately, several factors contributed to Philipp’s struggles at Dynamo. Oreshchuk cited the player’s homesickness, lack of friends in Moscow, and a severe dust allergy that required significant accommodations at the club’s training facility. These issues, combined with the player’s physical condition upon arrival, led to a disappointing spell at the club.

Philipp joined Dynamo in August 2019, making 29 appearances and scoring 9 goals before being loaned to Wolfsburg in October 2020. The German club subsequently purchased him in July 2021, bringing an end to his time with Dynamo Moscow.

Oreshchuk’s revelations highlight the importance of thorough player assessment and consideration of off-field factors in football transfers, especially when dealing with international moves to unfamiliar environments.
