Frank McCourt Takes Active Role in Marseille’s Season Conclusion
Olympique de Marseille’s American owner Frank McCourt is expected to make a rare appearance at the Vélodrome stadium this Sunday for the team’s crucial match against Stade Brestois. This visit marks McCourt’s second trip to Provence in just three weeks, signaling his growing involvement in the club’s affairs.
Reports suggest that McCourt is closely monitoring OM’s performance as the season draws to a close. The club’s qualification for the UEFA Champions League is of particular importance, given its significant impact on the team’s financial future. Interestingly, McCourt’s interest extends beyond the men’s team; he is also keeping a close eye on the progress of Marseille’s women’s squad, which is currently vying for promotion to the top division.
The importance of securing a Champions League spot cannot be overstated. Sporting Director Medhi Benatia emphasized this point in a recent interview, stating, “Failing to qualify for the Champions League next season would be catastrophic.” He further explained the financial implications, noting that without Champions League revenue and TV rights, meeting the club’s current salary and expense commitments would be extremely challenging.
Benatia added, “It’s a calculated risk taken by the decision-makers. While I’m not directly involved in these decisions, we’re all aware of the stakes. When I ask everyone at the club to put in extra effort, it’s for good reason.”
As Marseille enters this critical period, McCourt’s increased presence and attention underscore the pivotal nature of the upcoming matches for both the men’s and women’s teams.
