French Football Supporters Cease Communication with Authorities
The French football landscape is experiencing heightened tensions due to government proposals to disband prominent supporter groups. The French National Supporters’ Association, representing the majority of fan organizations in the country, has declared an end to discussions with authorities regarding match preparations.
During a Paris press conference, the association warned of potential pressure tactics, including the possibility of dissolving all groups. This move could lead to a complete breakdown in communication between supporters and authorities, reminiscent of the situation 15 years ago.
This decision comes in response to the French government’s plans to disband three major supporter groups: Brigade Loire (FC Nantes), Magic Fans (Saint-Étienne), and Green Angels (Saint-Étienne).
Implications for Supporter Management in France
The cessation of dialogue means that French law enforcement, including the National Division for Combating Hooliganism and Supporter Liaison Officers, will no longer have access to crucial information from supporter groups for organizing matches and away trips safely.
This development follows the French Sports Ministry’s refusal to meet with national supporter group representatives regarding the disbandment plans. Last week, 143 supporter groups in France signed an unprecedented statement, expressing concern that the government’s measures threaten both their organizations and the essence of football support in the country.
The situation remains tense, with potential far-reaching consequences for the relationship between football supporters and authorities in France.
