Atalanta`s manager Gian Piero Gasperini expresses his delight at the joyous atmosphere surrounding the match against his former club Genoa. He also commends Mateo Retegui`s outstanding performance, which may lead to him being named the league`s top scorer.
The match is set to take place at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, also known as Marassi. This is the only Serie A Week 37 fixture scheduled for today, as all other games have implications for the title race, European qualification, or relegation battles.
Gasperini reflected on the season, saying, “It has been another year filled with accomplishments, though with the hectic schedule, time seems to fly by without fully realizing it. Now we`re here celebrating a fantastic achievement.”
Gasperini`s Emotional Return to Genoa
Atalanta has secured third place and Champions League qualification, while Genoa comfortably sits in mid-table under Patrick Vieira`s management. Gasperini, who coached Genoa from 2006-2010 and again from 2013 to 2016, expressed his joy at returning to his former club: “It`s wonderful to be back here. The atmosphere is perfect for football, and I`m pleased to be here when Genoa is also relaxed after achieving their goals. It truly feels like a celebration.”
Retegui Nears Top Scorer Title
Despite making several changes to Atalanta`s starting lineup, Gasperini still includes Retegui, who has matched Pippo Inzaghi`s record of 24 goals in a single season for Atalanta, set in 1996-97. Retegui is on the verge of being crowned Serie A`s top scorer.
When asked about his role in Retegui`s success, Gasperini humbly stated, “It`s far more his achievement than mine. He scored with his head, right foot, left foot. He was exceptional in the first half of the season, though the second half was more challenging for everyone. He made the most of this opportunity and, as he said, will share this potential title with the entire team.”
