Gasperini: Club Brugge Capitalized on Chances Better Than Atalanta
Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini believes his team’s Champions League elimination at the hands of Club Brugge came down to crucial moments and efficiency in front of goal. Despite creating numerous opportunities, Atalanta fell to a 5-2 aggregate defeat against the Belgian side.
“The Champions League is often decided by specific incidents and key moments,” Gasperini explained after the 3-1 home loss that sealed Atalanta’s fate. “We conceded early, then again right after hitting the woodwork. Brugge maximized every opportunity they had.”
The Italian coach praised his team’s effort, noting they “played with dignity and created many chances.” However, he acknowledged the visitors’ clinical finishing made the difference: “We had more scoring opportunities overall, but they were more efficient with theirs.”
Gasperini defended his decision not to start the recently recovered Ademola Lookman, revealing the forward had only just returned to team training. He also addressed Atalanta’s recent dip in form, attributing it partly to injuries and the natural ebb and flow of a long season.
“We’ve struggled to convert chances lately,” Gasperini admitted. “But with our Champions League campaign now over, I believe the squad will have time to recuperate and finish the season strongly.”
While disappointed with the exit, Gasperini acknowledged the quality of their opponents: “We must give credit to this young, energetic Brugge team. The elimination is fair, though we’re left with regrets.”
