Gasperini Reflects on Atalanta’s Champions League Journey
Following Atalanta’s 2-2 draw against Barcelona in the Champions League, coach Gian Piero Gasperini shared his thoughts on the team’s performance and future prospects in the competition. Despite missing out on direct qualification to the round of 16, Gasperini expressed pride in his team’s achievements so far.
Atalanta twice came from behind to secure a point at the Camp Nou, with goals from Ederson and Mario Pasalic canceling out strikes by Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal and Ronald Araujo. Gasperini emphasized the importance of these experiences for his players and fans, stating, “For us, it’s all been a great journey, hearing our supporters sing in these iconic stadiums.”
Looking ahead to the play-off round, Gasperini acknowledged the strength of potential opponents Sporting CP and Club Brugge. He noted the challenge ahead, saying, “It was impossible to avoid a difficult team at this stage.”
When asked about his Champions League ambitions, Gasperini jokingly replied, “Winning the Champions League would be nice, but a treble would be even better,” highlighting his optimism despite the tough competition ahead.
The coach also provided injury updates on Sead Kolasinac and Giorgio Scalvini, expressing particular concern for Scalvini’s shoulder issue following his recent return from a long-term injury.
As Atalanta prepares for the next phase of their European campaign, Gasperini’s comments reflect a mix of pride in the team’s achievements and excitement for the challenges that lie ahead in their quest for Champions League success.
