Gerard Piqué Testifies in Court for ‘Supercup’ Case
Former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué appeared in court today as a suspect in the ongoing ‘Supercup’ investigation. The case revolves around payments made to relocate the Spanish Supercup to Saudi Arabia during Luis Rubiales’ tenure as president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).
Judge Delia Rodrigo summoned Piqué to testify and has requested Saudi Arabian authorities to provide bank records for both Piqué and Rubiales. The two are being investigated for “indications of crime,” with Piqué’s involvement centering on a reported €4 million annual commission he negotiated with the RFEF.
Piqué has been under investigation since May due to a clause between the RFEF and Saudi Arabia that granted him a “success fee.” The judge emphasized that Piqué was still an active Barcelona player at the time, potentially creating a conflict of interest. Despite Piqué’s claims of non-involvement, the Guardia Civil confirmed in December that he acted as an “intermediary” and “active party” in the agreement.
The case gained traction after leaked audio recordings between Piqué and Rubiales were published by El Confidencial, implicating the former player in the negotiations. Today, March 14, Piqué faces the magistrate to provide his testimony in this high-profile case that has shaken Spanish football.
