Giuseppe Rossi, the former Italian-American striker, opens up about his challenging experiences at Parma`s youth academy and his time at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson. Despite being considered a promising talent, Rossi`s career was often hampered by injuries.
Struggles at Parma`s Youth Academy
Rossi recalls his difficult transition to Parma`s academy at age 12: “It was a struggle. I was shy and introverted, finding it hard to make friends. The teachers didn`t offer much support, assuming I was only there for football. I would cry every night until my mother visited. The football pitch became my only sanctuary.”
Surprising Experience with Sir Alex Ferguson
At 17, Rossi joined Manchester United, where he encountered the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson. “He was surprisingly paternal, knowing how to nurture young players both personally and professionally. Training was incredibly intense, teaching me quickly about earning respect in such a competitive environment.”
Roy Keane Anecdote
Rossi reveals he was the unnamed player in a story from Roy Keane`s autobiography. “Keane wrote about confronting a young Italian player who didn`t pass him the ball. The player responded with a defiant glare, impressing Keane. That player was me, though I don`t remember the incident. It shows how focused I was on building my career.”
Recently, Rossi celebrated his career with `Pepito Day` at Fiorentina, reuniting with former teammates and reflecting on his journey through football.
