Gravina: Italy Will Carefully Consider Options for New National Team Coach

Italian Football Federation (FIGC) President Gabriele Gravina has stated that the organization will use all available time to make a decision on the next coach for Italy`s national team following the dismissal of Luciano Spalletti.

Spalletti was relieved of his duties after Italy`s 3-0 loss to Norway, despite having to lead the team in another 2026 World Cup qualifier just two days later. Italy went on to defeat Moldova 2-0 in that match, but will have a new manager in place when the squad reconvenes in September.

“We are still evaluating the situation,” Gravina told Sky Sport Italia. “We have some time at our disposal and intend to use it fully to make the best decision.”

Limited Options for Italy`s Next Coach

The federation had initially approached Claudio Ranieri, but he had already committed to a consulting role with Roma and retired from coaching. Currently, Gennaro Gattuso appears to be the frontrunner for the position. Gattuso recently left his role at Hajduk Split by mutual agreement and was part of Italy`s 2006 World Cup-winning squad.

“Beyond specific names, we want to understand if there is a new project,” Gravina added.

The FIGC president personally dismissed Spalletti, whom he had brought in to replace Roberto Mancini following tensions nearly two years ago. Gravina expressed his disappointment at the situation: “There is a feeling of great sadness. Our world is also about emotions, and I must be honest, I have an excellent relationship with Luciano, which has only grown stronger in recent days. When a bond like this breaks, it is painful. He was the target of many attacks.”

As Italy prepares for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the selection of a new coach will be crucial in shaping the team`s future and restoring its competitive edge on the international stage.
