Pep Guardiola expressed satisfaction with Manchester City`s performance in their 5-2 victory against Juventus in the FIFA Club World Cup. The manager noted that the team had not played at such a high level for some time.
Guardiola commented on the match, stating, “We defeated a team that had performed exceptionally well in their previous two games. Juventus is always a formidable opponent, but we played in a way we haven`t for a long time. We`re rediscovering our identity, which is more important than simply winning.”
The Citizens dominated the game in Orlando, with the scoreline potentially being even more lopsided if not for the efforts of Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio.
Regarding Erling Haaland, who came off the bench to score, Guardiola emphasized the importance of competition within the squad. “Haaland is a prolific scorer, but he needs to understand that there`s competition for places. Omar Marmoush played well, and everyone must give their best,” he said.
De Bruyne`s move to Napoli
Guardiola also addressed Kevin De Bruyne`s departure to Napoli as a free agent. He expressed his affection for the player and acknowledged his significant contribution to Manchester City`s success in recent years.
“It was a difficult decision, but I wish him all the best,” Guardiola stated. “He`s joining a special club with one of the best coaches of all time. Antonio Conte always manages to get what he needs from his team. I hope Kevin finds much happiness there.”
The manager`s comments highlight the high regard in which he holds both De Bruyne and Napoli`s new coach, Antonio Conte, setting the stage for an intriguing chapter in the Belgian midfielder`s career.
