Hummels Opens Up About Roma Challenges and Career Decision
German defender Mats Hummels has shared insights into his experience at AS Roma, revealing the difficulties he faced both on and off the pitch. The World Cup winner, who joined the Italian club as a free agent in September 2024, also discussed his upcoming decision regarding his football future.
Hummels, who spent his entire career in Germany with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund before moving to Rome, admitted to struggling initially under coaches Daniele De Rossi and Ivan Juric. However, he found his footing once Claudio Ranieri took over as manager.
The defender spoke candidly about the challenges of adapting to life in the Italian capital: “Rome is an enormous and beautiful city with incredible history. However, it took me a while to understand the traffic rules here. It was really stressful for the first few months.” He added humorously, “I was recently told that I’m already driving like a Roman, but I think that might have been more of a veiled insult than a compliment.”
Future Plans Still Uncertain
With his short-term contract at Roma coming to an end, Hummels, who will turn 37 in December, has not yet made a decision about his future in football. “I don’t need to decide in the next few weeks,” he explained. “In recent years, I’ve listened to my body, my family, and especially my son, because I miss spending time with him.”
The veteran defender emphasized the importance of careful consideration: “I will make a decision in the summer. There’s a lot of responsibility having a seven-year-old son, but I think we’ll find a way to be happy.”
During his time with Roma, Hummels has made 15 competitive appearances and scored one goal – a crucial late equalizer against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League.
As Hummels contemplates his next move, fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see what the future holds for this experienced and accomplished defender.
