Lyon’s manager, Paulo Fonseca, has been handed a 9-month suspension by Ligue 1’s Disciplinary Committee for confronting referee Benoît Millot. This severe penalty is considered unprecedented for a coach in a major Ligue 1 club. The ban, effective until November 30th, hasn’t deterred Lyon, who are supporting Fonseca. The 52-year-old expressed his gratitude to Canal+ for the club’s support during this challenging period, stating that the club and team’s backing is what matters most. He made this statement before Lyon’s Europa League match against FCSB.
Fonseca confirmed his commitment to Lyon, stating he will not resign despite the long suspension. He affirmed his readiness to continue working and find solutions with the team to prepare for upcoming matches.
Fonseca, previously with Milan AC, believes the ban is excessive. While admitting to a face-to-face confrontation with Millot, he denied any physical contact with the referee. He expressed feeling a “great injustice” regarding the decision and emphasized he never intended to be aggressive.
