Igor Korneev Reflects on Barcelona’s Dominating Win Against Real Madrid

Igor Korneev, the only Russian footballer to have played for Barcelona, shared his thoughts on the Catalan club’s emphatic 5-2 victory over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final.

When asked if the scoreline reflected the game accurately, Korneev stated, “I believe the result is generally fair. Considering what we saw, I don’t think it’s too harsh on Madrid. Real’s main issue was that five or six players were essentially absent on the field.”

Korneev elaborated on which players underperformed: “Vinicius, Camavinga, Tchouameni, and Vazquez were largely ineffective. Rodrygo was somewhat better. Valverde struggled to coordinate with Camavinga, leading to confusion about defensive responsibilities. As a result, we saw the Uruguayan making numerous last-ditch tackles.”

He continued, “There was complete disarray. Tchouameni isn’t a natural defender, and the same goes for Vazquez. Barcelona created significant problems for their opponents in these areas. Mendy also disappeared, inexplicably giving Yamal too much space.”

Korneev emphasized Barcelona’s dominance: “The Catalans completely outplayed Madrid. In the first half alone, Flick’s team scored four goals and could have had more. I can’t remember the last time I saw nine dangerous chances at Courtois’ goal before halftime. When Barcelona’s players aren’t closely marked, they naturally showcase their full potential.”

Regarding the possibility of a Real Madrid comeback after Rodrygo’s goal, Korneev dismissed the notion: “No, the game was decided in the first half. It’s impossible to overcome such a deficit without opening up, and doing so against this Barcelona team would only create more problems. Real Madrid should consider themselves fortunate that Barcelona only scored once in the second half.”

Korneev concluded by expressing his surprise at the outcome: “I must admit, I was very surprised. By all accounts and predictions, I considered Ancelotti’s team the favorite. But at this level, if one player underperforms, it’s already challenging. Here we’re talking about six players!”
