INEOS Could Save Millions by Selling High-Earning Man United Star
Manchester United are expected to see several player departures this summer as new part-owners INEOS look to reshape the squad. While veterans like Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton are likely to leave when their contracts expire, the club could also look to offload some higher-earning players to reduce the wage bill.
One prime candidate is defender Harry Maguire. Despite regaining his place in the team this season under Erik ten Hag, Maguire remains one of United’s top earners on £190,000 per week. Since joining for £80 million in 2019, he has cost the club a total of £139 million in transfer fees and wages.
While Maguire has shown improved form recently, United have promising young center-backs coming through like Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven. At 31 years old, Maguire’s hefty salary may be hard to justify long-term.
If Maguire stays another season, his total earnings at United would reach nearly £70 million. By selling him this summer, INEOS could potentially save over £10 million in wages alone next season.
The decision won’t be easy, as Maguire has shown commitment and ability when called upon. However, with United short on funds and needing to reshape the squad, offloading such a high-earning player could free up significant resources for reinvestment.
While Maguire’s redemption arc has been impressive, the financial realities may lead United to consider cashing in on the England international this summer as they look to build for the future under new ownership.
