Inter Milan head coach Simone Inzaghi was presented with an oversized Tapiro d`Oro trophy the day after his team suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final.
The Tapiro d`Oro (Golden Tapir) is a satirical award given to public figures who have recently faced public embarrassment. It is part of the Italian satirical news program Striscia la Notizia.
On Sunday, less than 24 hours after the crushing loss to PSG, Inzaghi was approached and given the Tapiro d`Oro as he was heading home. Though he accepted the award, Inzaghi was clearly not in the mood for jokes so soon after Inter`s Champions League humiliation.
Inzaghi admitted that his team “performed poorly” and that PSG “deserved the victory.” He added, “I`ve always been a good sport. Defeat hurts, but we must accept it.”
The Tapiro d`Oro has been given to other Serie A figures this season, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Alvaro Morata. However, the timing and circumstances of Inzaghi`s award make it particularly brutal, coming immediately after such a devastating loss on European football`s biggest stage.
