Ipswich Town Considering Tall Midfielder as Possible Successor to Kalvin Phillips
Ipswich Town and manager Kieran McKenna are exploring the possibility of signing a versatile 6’6″ midfielder who could potentially replace loanee Kalvin Phillips.
The Tractor Boys find themselves in a precarious position, sitting in the Premier League relegation zone after a 10-game winless streak in the top flight. Their recent 4-2 loss to Nottingham Forest at Portman Road, coupled with Wolves’ victory over Southampton, has left them nine points adrift of safety.
McKenna remains optimistic despite the challenge ahead, stating: “We have two crucial matches following the international break. We need to be prepared and ready to compete. While the gap is significant, we won’t give up hope or stop fighting until the final whistle of the season.”
Should Ipswich face relegation, several players may depart in the summer, including Manchester City loanee Phillips. Reports suggest Ipswich is unlikely to make Phillips’ move permanent, with the midfielder reportedly reaching a verbal agreement to join Leeds United if they secure promotion.
As a result, Ipswich may be in the market for a new holding midfielder. According to Africa Foot, they have expressed interest in Kalidou Sidibe from French club En Avant Guingamp.
Sidibe, who can play as a defensive midfielder, central midfielder, or center-back, stands at an imposing 6’6″ – making him the tallest player in French Ligue 2. The 26-year-old has been a regular for Guingamp this season, contributing two goals and five assists in over 30 appearances across all competitions.
While Celtic has already submitted a £1.6m bid for Sidibe, Ipswich faces competition from PSV Eindhoven, Grasshopper Zurich, and Toulouse for his signature. If Ipswich does drop to the Championship, Sidibe’s height could prove valuable in the physically demanding second tier.
This potential transfer is one to monitor, though Ipswich may need to act swiftly given Celtic’s early move in the race for Sidibe’s services.
