Isak 2.0: Liverpool Target “Next Mbappe” as Nunez Upgrade

Premier League champions Liverpool are reportedly eyeing Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike as a potential summer signing, viewing the 22-year-old as an alternative to Newcastle’s Alexander Isak.

Despite winning the league title this season, Liverpool are looking to strengthen their attack after inconsistent performances from Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota. While Luis Diaz has impressed, manager Arne Slot is keen to add an out-and-out striker.

Newcastle’s Isak has been in scintillating form, scoring 22 Premier League goals this season. However, his reported £150 million price tag appears prohibitive for Liverpool’s owners FSG.

Instead, the Reds have turned their attention to Frankfurt’s Ekitike, who has been likened to Kylian Mbappe. The French forward has excelled since joining Frankfurt permanently last summer, scoring 22 goals and providing 10 assists across all competitions.

Ekitike’s dynamic attacking play has caught Liverpool’s eye. He ranks in the top 5% of forwards in Europe’s top 5 leagues for shots, shot-creating actions, progressive carries and successful take-ons per 90 minutes.

While not yet at Isak’s level, Ekitike possesses a similar skillset as an all-round forward. His intelligent movement, dribbling ability and clinical finishing have drawn comparisons to a young Mbappe.

At a reported £80 million, Ekitike represents a more attainable target for Liverpool compared to Isak. However, the Reds face competition from Arsenal and Manchester United for the exciting French prospect.

Signing Ekitike would fit Liverpool’s data-driven transfer approach under FSG. While not the finished article, the 22-year-old has huge potential to develop into an elite striker under Slot’s tutelage at Anfield.

With Darwin Nunez struggling for consistency, Ekitike could prove to be the clinical finisher Liverpool need to maintain their title challenge next season. The “next Mbappe” may well end up leading the line for the Reds in 2024/25.
