Italian Referee Sozza Discusses VAR Challenges and Officiating Pressures
Simone Sozza, one of Italy’s most promising young referees, recently shared his thoughts on the challenges facing modern football officials. Speaking at an awards ceremony, Sozza addressed several key issues in contemporary refereeing.
On the topic of consistent decision-making, Sozza acknowledged the difficulty, stating, “As referees, we are a group of individuals striving to make correct calls. Achieving complete uniformity is never simple.” He highlighted handball interpretation as particularly challenging, noting that officials follow specific guidelines and criteria.
Addressing the pressure on referees, Sozza admitted, “We feel the pressure, and it’s natural. It’s an integral part of our profession.” He emphasized that while referees are young, they are typically older than players and undergo rigorous physical preparation.
Regarding VAR technology, Sozza revealed, “Young referees may initially feel apprehensive about VAR potentially correcting their decisions. As the first country to implement VAR, it’s now expected that any penalty decision will be subject to review.”
Sozza also noted positive developments, such as players becoming more familiar with the rules. He expressed disappointment at suggestions of referee bias, asserting, “We are credible professionals who are passionate about football and committed to fair officiating.”
