Jean-Louis Gasset Remains at Helm of Struggling Montpellier
Despite Montpellier HSC’s precarious position at the bottom of Ligue 1, Jean-Louis Gasset is set to continue as the team’s manager. The club’s decision comes amidst growing concerns about potential relegation to Ligue 2.
Gasset has publicly acknowledged the team’s dire situation, expressing doubt about their ability to avoid relegation. “If we can’t win against the 17th-placed team when we’re in 18th place and five points behind, it’s clear we don’t have what it takes to compete in Ligue 1,” he stated.
The recent match against AS Saint-Étienne, which was abandoned due to crowd disturbances, has further complicated matters. Saint-Étienne had taken a 2-0 lead before the game was halted. It remains unclear whether they will be awarded the win or if Montpellier will face additional penalties.
According to reports, Montpellier’s decision to retain Gasset is largely influenced by the uncertainty surrounding potential punishments from the LFP (French Professional Football League) for the match abandonment. These could include point deductions, financial penalties, or even stadium closures.
As it stands, Montpellier finds themselves eight points away from safety, with their Ligue 1 future hanging in the balance. The club’s management appears to be adopting a wait-and-see approach before making any drastic changes to the coaching staff.
