John Textor Confirms Paulo Fonseca to Stay as Lyon Manager Despite Ban

Olympique Lyonnais manager Paulo Fonseca has received a nine-month ban following a confrontation with referee Benoît Millot after last weekend’s 2-1 victory over Stade Brestois. Despite this, Lyon owner John Textor has confirmed that Fonseca’s position at the club is secure.

Fonseca, who was appointed at the end of January, faces significant restrictions due to the LFP ruling on Wednesday. He is prohibited from the touchline until November 30th and from the dressing room until September. Lyon has strongly criticized the LFP’s decision, calling it “extremely severe” and “unprecedented.” The club announced they will explore options to appeal the ban, which is effective immediately but currently does not extend to European competitions. This means Fonseca will be present for tonight’s UEFA Europa League match against FCSB.

Questions arose about Fonseca’s future with Les Gones given his extended absence from the sidelines for most of 2025. However, Textor addressed these concerns via social media, affirming the Portuguese manager’s future at Lyon. He stated, “I stand with you today, and always. You made a mistake… Your apology was sincere… and your punishment is clearly too severe. You are the right man for OL and we shall persevere. Allez l’OL,” as shared on social media.
