Journalist reveals Tottenham’s plans for Mathys Tel after speaking with club sources
Tottenham Hotspur’s new signing Mathys Tel made his debut off the bench in their 4-0 Carabao Cup semifinal loss to Liverpool. Despite the disappointing result, Tel showed flashes of quality and impressed fans with his positive attitude.
The 19-year-old French forward joined Spurs on loan from Bayern Munich in January. According to journalist Dean Jones, Tottenham fully intend to make the move permanent at the end of the season.
Speaking on a podcast, Jones said: “Tottenham still intend to make this a permanent signing. Even if it was initially going to be a dry loan, they’ll try to convince him over the coming months that this is the right place for him.”
However, Jones expressed some doubt about whether Tel wants to leave Bayern permanently: “I still feel the player doesn’t fully want to leave Bayern Munich. Even if he does really well at Tottenham, he might see it as a way to play for Bayern again.”
Jones noted that Tel originally preferred a move to Manchester United before joining Spurs. He suggested the player may view this loan as a chance to impress Bayern rather than secure a long-term future at Tottenham.
Regardless of Tel’s intentions, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is said to have personally called the player to explain how he fits into the team’s plans. The club clearly see Tel as an exciting talent for the future and will aim to convince him to stay beyond this season.
Tel’s cameo against Liverpool showed his potential, and he could play an important role as Tottenham look to salvage their season after the cup exit. His future beyond the summer remains uncertain, but Spurs will do all they can to make his stay permanent.
