Roma midfielder Manu Koné has spoken candidly about his near-transfer to Inter Milan this summer, emphasizing his loyalty to Roma and his conversations with coach Gian Piero Gasperini.
In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Koné addressed the speculation surrounding his potential move to Inter. “Interest from a club like Inter is flattering,” he said. “I had a conversation with Gasperini where I expressed uncertainty about my future. However, I assured him that as long as I wear the Roma shirt, I`ll give 100% effort.”
The French international highlighted his gratitude towards Roma, stating, “Roma was the only club that believed in me last summer. I feel a strong sense of duty to repay their faith.”
Koné also touched on his interactions with former Borussia Mönchengladbach teammates now at Inter, such as Yann Sommer and Marcus Thuram. “We joked about the potential move,” he revealed. “They advised me to make the best decision, but ultimately it wasn`t my choice to make. I was very content at Roma and wasn`t desperate to leave.”
Reflecting on Roma`s strong start to the season, Koné expressed optimism: “Being at the top of the table feels great. It`s what we work towards. We`re cautious not to get carried away, especially considering our slow start last year which affected our final standing.”
The midfielder confirmed Roma`s ambitions for the season: “Our goals are to secure a top-four finish and win the Europa League.” He also praised Gasperini`s passionate coaching style: “I`ve never seen anyone live matches with such intensity. It`s as if he`s on the pitch himself, which inspires us to fight wholeheartedly for him.”
As Roma continues to impress in Serie A, Koné`s commitment and performance will be crucial in their pursuit of domestic and European success.
