La Liga Declares Barcelona Lacks Financial Fair Play for Player Signings
La Liga has issued an official statement revealing that FC Barcelona currently lacks the financial fair play capacity to register players Dani Olmo and Pau Victor. This announcement comes in response to reports that a financial operation Barcelona claimed to have conducted to allow these registrations never actually took place.
According to La Liga, Barcelona reported selling VIP boxes at the new Camp Nou for 100 million euros in January, which supposedly provided room in their salary cap for new signings. However, La Liga states this transaction was not actually completed or at least cannot be counted for the 2024 financial year.
The statement declares: “Based on Barcelona’s Financial Statements, the club did not have any registration capacity or ‘fair play’ balance on December 31, 2024 or January 3, 2025, nor has it had any since then or currently to register players Dani Olmo and Pau Victor.”
La Liga has taken steps to reduce Barcelona’s salary margin as a result. This makes it more difficult for the club to make new signings or renew existing contracts. The league body also plans to file a complaint regarding Barcelona’s December 31 audit which claimed the VIP box sale as income.
This development comes at a critical time, as Spain’s Superior Sports Council has until April 7 to decide whether to maintain the temporary allowance permitting Olmo and Victor to play. La Liga’s statement could significantly impact this decision by demonstrating Barcelona lacked the financial capacity for these moves.
The situation highlights ongoing financial challenges and scrutiny facing FC Barcelona as they attempt to strengthen their squad while complying with league financial regulations.
