La Liga President Criticizes Real Madrid’s Reaction to Refereeing Controversy
La Liga President Javier Tebas has responded harshly to Real Madrid’s recent statements regarding officiating in Spanish football.
Following their 1-0 loss to Espanyol in La Liga’s 22nd round, Real Madrid demanded access to the referees’ communication recordings. This request was specifically related to a tackle by Espanyol defender Carlos Romero on Kylian Mbappe, which only resulted in a yellow card.
The Madrid club also called for a complete overhaul of Spain’s refereeing system, accusing officials of repeatedly causing harm to the club.
Tebas strongly criticized Real Madrid’s stance, stating, “Real Madrid is attempting to undermine the competitions. They’ve constructed a narrative, culminating in their recent statement. They’re portraying themselves as victims, which is inaccurate, and they’re misinterpreting the Negreira case, which is still under investigation.”
He continued, “In the Negreira case, it was confirmed that he could influence referee promotions and demotions, but no payments to any colleagues were proven. Real Madrid’s claim of victimhood is exaggerated and inappropriate. In my view, their goal is to harm the competitions. They’ve lost their minds.”
Tebas concluded, “I don’t need to speak with Florentino Perez. We can’t move forward with someone who believes the competitions are rigged and the referees are corrupt.”
