Lazio’s Patric Sidelined for Remainder of Season Following Ankle Surgery
Lazio defender Patric has officially ended his 2024-25 campaign after undergoing surgery on his right ankle tendon. The Spanish player took to social media to explain his condition and address the fans who have been wondering about his recent absences from the pitch.
Patric revealed that he had been battling with this injury for some time, which began during a match against Como in November. Initially, he attempted to play through the pain with the help of anti-inflammatory medications and injections. However, the discomfort persisted, leading to a diagnosis of a longitudinal split in the peroneus brevis tendon.
Faced with two options – immediate surgery or conservative therapy – Patric initially chose the latter in hopes of returning to play this season. Despite his best efforts over the past two months, including intensive rehabilitation, the defender was unable to regain full strength and stability in his ankle. Ultimately, the pain and instability forced him to opt for surgical intervention.
In his message to supporters, Patric expressed his disappointment at not being able to continue fighting alongside his teammates but assured fans of his determination to return stronger than ever.
The loss of Patric leaves Lazio with one fewer player available for their Europa League campaign, as UEFA regulations do not allow for roster substitutions at this stage. However, there may still be time to adjust the Serie A squad list before the March 31 deadline.
Coach Baroni now faces the challenge of reorganizing his defensive options. While left-back Luca Pellegrini could potentially be reintegrated into the squad list, the team will still be short one central defender. Young Danish center-back Oliver Provstgaard, who arrived in January but has yet to make his debut, may now have an increased chance of seeing playing time before the season concludes.
