Lazio’s Squad Selection Dilemma for Domestic and European Competitions
Lazio’s recent acquisitions have put coach Baroni in a difficult position regarding squad list selections for Serie A and the Europa League. For the domestic league, the departure of Akpa Akpro and Castrovilli, along with Hysaj’s return, leaves Toma Basic as the sole surplus player. Under-22 players like Ibrahimovic, Belahyane, and Provstgaard can be registered without restrictions.
The situation is more complex for UEFA competitions, where only homegrown players can be used without limitations – a category in which Lazio currently has no players. Consequently, Baroni must make at least one cut to the squad. Pellegrini, who has failed to impress during Tavares’ absence, and Hysaj, who might be limited to domestic matches, are the main candidates for exclusion.
A potential solution could arise if Tchaouna, who has attracted interest from Bologna and PSV, is sold. However, this would raise questions about whether the club would seek a replacement in the final hours of the transfer window.
