Game of the week: OGC Nice v Olympique Lyonnais, Sunday
Except for PSG, Nice is the team with the best form in France, according to statistics. Franck Haise’s team has won their last four Ligue 1 matches and has only lost once in their last 11 league games. They managed to win against Saint-Étienne without playing exceptionally well, which is typical of a strong team and a sign that they are favorites for a top-three finish. This Nice team has a lot of experience and know-how, and Baptiste Santamaria’s arrival in winter has strengthened the midfield balance. It’s a well-rounded team. Only Marseille and PSG have scored more goals, and only PSG, Lille, and Toulouse have conceded fewer. They are efficient in both attack and defense, making them favorites in most games.
This remains true as they prepare to host Lyon. OL barely defeated Brest thanks to two goals from Alexandre Lacazette, but it came at a price. Their coach, Paulo Fonseca, was sent off for attempting to headbutt the referee. He could face a seven-month ban from the sidelines, an action that could derail a season and alter team dynamics. He will definitely be absent from the bench for this game and possibly for the rest of the season. There are interesting matchups ahead, and the midfield battle will be crucial, but there’s a sense that Nice is superior both individually and as a team, as reflected in the current league table.
