Liverpool Ownership Group Considering Málaga CF Acquisition
Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the ownership entity behind Liverpool FC, is reportedly exploring the possibility of acquiring Spanish football club Málaga CF. This move aligns with FSG’s strategy to expand their football operations and apply their sports management expertise to historically significant clubs with growth potential.
According to reports, an FSG delegation visited Málaga’s facilities in February to assess the club’s potential and evaluate the feasibility of a takeover. Spain is viewed as an attractive market for FSG’s expansion plans, with the group aiming to restore Málaga to its former prominence in European football.
Málaga’s current manager, Sergio Pellicer, expressed openness to new ownership, stating, “As a fan, I believe we need what’s best for the club. Anyone who wants the best for the club is welcome.” This sentiment suggests a receptiveness to potential changes in ownership structure.
The current owner, Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani, recently hinted at upcoming changes through a cryptic social media post: “They thought no one would speak. They believed it was buried. It’s not like that, this starts now.” This message has fueled speculation about imminent developments in the club’s ownership situation.
FSG is not alone in its interest in Málaga. Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), led by Paris Saint-Germain owner Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, and other investors have also reportedly shown interest in acquiring the club. The coming months may reveal which group, if any, will take the reins of this historic Spanish club and lead its efforts to return to the upper echelons of European football.
