Liverpool Should Consider Replacing Underperforming Striker
Despite Liverpool’s strong position in the Premier League title race, there are still areas where the team could improve. One such area is the striker position, where Darwin Nunez has failed to live up to expectations since his £85 million transfer from Benfica in 2022.
While Nunez has shown flashes of brilliance, scoring 40 goals in 136 appearances, his finishing has been inconsistent. The Uruguayan has missed an alarming 81 “big chances” since joining Liverpool, more than double the number of goals he has scored.
In contrast, Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak has been far more clinical in front of goal. Since the start of last season, Isak has scored 40 Premier League goals compared to Nunez’s 16, despite earning £20,000 less per week.
Liverpool have reportedly shown interest in Isak, though Newcastle value him at over £150 million. While expensive, Isak could provide the consistent goalscoring threat Liverpool need to compete at the highest level.
Manager Arne Slot should seriously consider moving on from Nunez this summer and pushing the board to pursue a more reliable striker like Isak. With reported interest from Atletico Madrid and Al-Nassr, Liverpool may be able to recoup a significant portion of their initial investment in Nunez.
Replacing Nunez with a clinical finisher could be the final piece Liverpool need to sustain their success in the coming seasons. The club must be ruthless in addressing weaknesses if they hope to continue challenging for major trophies.
