Lloyd Kelly Discusses Juventus Move, Defensive Style, and Conversation with Thiago Motta
English defender Lloyd Kelly has completed his transfer to Juventus on deadline day. The former Newcastle player acknowledges the need to adapt quickly to Italian football, which he expects to be different from what he’s accustomed to.
Juventus secured Kelly on loan with an obligation to buy for €17.5 million plus bonuses. The club views him as a potential solution to their defensive issues, which have been exacerbated by injuries in recent months.
Kelly describes himself as a player who “loves defending” and thrives on one-on-one challenges. These qualities are reminiscent of Gleison Bremer, Juventus’ defensive cornerstone who suffered a season-ending injury earlier in the campaign.
“It’s an incredible feeling to join such a historic club,” Kelly told Juventus TV. “Juventus is a massive name in Italian football. Every player understands the significance of wearing this jersey. I’m thrilled to be here and eager to get started.”
Describing his playing style, Kelly said, “I’m a defender who likes to get on the ball and relishes one-on-one duels. I’m not afraid to put my body on the line, and as a defender, my goal is to keep clean sheets. I give my all in training and matches, and I’m looking forward to beginning this new chapter.”
Kelly mentioned having a brief conversation with new coach Thiago Motta and expressed his willingness to adapt to Juventus’ playing style, which involves defenders in the team’s build-up play.
“I had a quick chat with the coach this morning,” Kelly explained. “It was just a brief exchange due to the busy schedule, but I’m sure we’ll have more in-depth discussions soon. I’m eager to adapt to the team’s style of play and understand how the coach wants us to perform. There will be many conversations to come.”
The 26-year-old defender added, “I’m excited about this new challenge. It will be different, and I’ll need to adapt quickly, but I’m looking forward to it. I never shy away from a challenge, and I’ll give it my all. I’m confident we can achieve great things during my time here.”
