Lloyd Kelly’s Juventus Debut Falls Short of Expectations
Lloyd Kelly, Juventus’ recent loan signing from Newcastle United, made his Serie A debut in a match against Como. However, the English defender’s performance left much to be desired, as reflected in the low ratings given by Italian sports media.
Kelly joined Juventus on loan with a potential permanent transfer clause on the final day of the transfer window. His obligation to buy is contingent on meeting personal and team objectives.
The defender’s first appearance for Juventus came on Friday in a 2-1 victory over Como. Kelly was brought on as a substitute at half-time, replacing Nicolò Savona in the right-back position.
Unfortunately, Kelly’s debut was less than impressive. Italian sports publications unanimously rated his performance at 5.5 out of 10. La Gazzetta dello Sport noted that Kelly struggled against an in-form Strefezza and lacked confidence at times.
Corriere dello Sport mentioned that Kelly played on the left side, took some risks, and made a couple of defensive blocks. Tuttosport was more critical, stating that while Kelly was “thrown into the fire” as a full-back, there were clearly areas that needed improvement.
Prior to his move to Juventus, Kelly had joined Newcastle United on a free transfer from Bournemouth in July 2024, reuniting with his former manager Eddie Howe. During the first half of the 2024-25 season at Newcastle, Kelly made 14 appearances, playing a total of 596 minutes and providing one assist.
