Locatelli on Juventus Defeat: ‘Fans Have Every Right to Jeer’

Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli admitted that the club’s supporters “have every right to jeer” following their humiliating 4-0 home defeat to Atalanta. This significant loss was Juventus’s largest at home since October 1967.

The match was anticipated as a key battle for third place in Serie A, with only three points separating the teams beforehand. However, Atalanta dominated the game, securing a decisive victory in Turin.

Atalanta’s goals were scored by Mateo Retegui, Marten de Roon, Davide Zappacosta, and Ademola Lookman, resulting in a resounding 4-0 win.

“It’s difficult to speak after such a match,” confessed captain Locatelli. “I felt that we were performing well until the penalty. However, conceding a second goal immediately after halftime really deflated us. Instead of reacting positively, we performed even worse, making it easier for a strong team like Atalanta.”

Juventus appeared to be a different team compared to their recent form, having achieved five consecutive Serie A victories. This game was crucial for solidifying their position in the top four and potentially challenging for the league title.

Locatelli Understands Fan Disappointment

Andrea Cambiaso and Teun Koopmeiners of Juventus look dejected after defeat to Atalanta
TURIN, ITALY – MARCH 09: Andrea Cambiaso and Teun Koopmeiners of Juventus look dejected after the team’s defeat in the Serie A match against Atalanta at the Allianz Stadium on March 09, 2025 in Turin, Italy.

The fans’ discontent was evident even from the beginning of the second half, escalating after Atalanta’s fourth goal, which prompted a significant number of fans to leave the Allianz Juventus Stadium early.

“It’s clear that the fans are justified in jeering after witnessing a performance like that. I always remind our younger players, and it’s important to remember we are a young team and this situation is not helpful, but the atmosphere is directly influenced by us and our performances,” Locatelli stated.

“The supporters follow us everywhere, and they have the right to express their displeasure. We need to reverse this trend; it all depends on us and our approach.”

Juventus had not experienced a Serie A home defeat of this magnitude since October 1967, when they lost 4-0 to Torino in a derby match.

“We must also acknowledge Atalanta’s quality; they were very strong and won most of the individual battles. We prepared for this in training, but they were exceptionally effective on counter-attacks and capitalized on their opportunities.”

“We need to give our utmost effort and continue working hard in training; that’s the only way forward.”
