Lyon Owner Reveals Reasoning Behind Manager’s Dismissal
Despite orchestrating Olympique Lyonnais’ remarkable ascent from potential relegation to European qualification last season, Pierre Sage was recently removed from his position as manager. The team’s inconsistent performance this season, culminating in three consecutive draws, led to this unexpected decision.
John Textor, Lyon’s owner, shared insights into the decision-making process in a recent interview. Initially facing resistance from his advisors, Textor posed a series of questions that ultimately led to a consensus on the need for change. He asked about the possibility of reaching the Champions League under Sage’s leadership, and when met with skepticism, challenged the team’s willingness to abandon that ambition.
Sage’s replacement, Paulo Fonseca, formerly of AC Milan, has already taken charge. His tenure began with observing a Europa League match from the stands, followed by his debut on the sidelines in a heated rivalry match against Olympique de Marseille. Unfortunately for Fonseca, his first game ended in a narrow 3-2 defeat, courtesy of a late goal by Luis Henrique.
This managerial shift underscores Lyon’s determination to compete at the highest level of European football, even if it means making difficult personnel decisions mid-season.
