Rasmus Hojlund’s recent miss highlights Manchester United’s need for a clinical striker. Despite a promising opportunity against Arsenal, Hojlund hesitated, failing to convert, which is symptomatic of his 20-game goal drought.
His struggles are further emphasized by his Premier League goal tally of just two for the season, the same as defender Matthijs de Ligt. Hojlund’s £64m transfer fee looks increasingly hefty considering his output, especially when compared to the more prolific starts of Alexander Isak and Erling Haaland at similar price points.
While Hojlund is still young and has potential, INEOS are actively looking for forward reinforcements this summer.
Man Utd’s Mateta Interest
Recent reports link Manchester United with Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. Negotiations are rumored to have begun for a potential £40m transfer of the 27-year-old.
Mateta has been impressive for Crystal Palace, scoring 16 Premier League goals last season. After a slow start to the current campaign, he has found his form, reaching 12 league goals this season, including a brace against Manchester United at Old Trafford. His record against United is three goals in seven matches.
His physical presence has attracted Manchester United’s attention, but he is not their only target.
Man Utd’s Striker Search Broadens
According to reports, Mateta is a ‘surprise name’ on Manchester United’s shortlist, as they seek a quick solution upfront. However, their primary target is reportedly Victor Osimhen of Napoli, currently playing for Galatasaray.
Acquiring Osimhen, aged 26, is proving challenging due to high wage and transfer fee demands, and the potential lack of European football for United.
If Manchester United secure Europa League qualification, they might have a better chance to sign Osimhen, who is considered a significant upgrade over Hojlund and Mateta.
Osimhen: Dream Upgrade for Man Utd
Hojlund has scored just seven goals this season, while another potential target, Joshua Zirkzee, has six. Manchester United’s need for a prolific striker is evident, making Osimhen an ideal acquisition.
Despite playing outside Europe’s top leagues currently, Osimhen has been in excellent form, scoring 23 goals in 29 games for Galatasaray, compared to Hojlund’s 8 goals in 80 appearances for United.
Osimhen’s impressive scoring record includes 76 goals in 133 games for Napoli and 18 in 38 for Lille. In contrast, Mateta had scored 27 goals in 71 games for Mainz before joining Crystal Palace.
While Osimhen lacks Premier League experience, his proven goalscoring ability suggests he could thrive at Manchester United.
Described as a ‘monster’, Osimhen excels as a central striker, ranking highly for touches in the penalty area. He is also praised for his aerial ability and movement, fitting well into a potential 3-4-3 system.
