Manchester United is considering signing a Championship player this summer as Ruben Amorim looks to strengthen his squad, according to reports.
Neville Criticizes Onana Despite United’s Draw with Arsenal
Manchester United extended their unbeaten Premier League run to three games on Sunday, drawing 1-1 with Arsenal at Old Trafford. This result distanced them further from the relegation zone and effectively ended Arsenal’s title aspirations.
United took the lead with a brilliant Bruno Fernandes free-kick just before halftime. They had opportunities to increase their lead in the second half but were made to pay for their missed chances when Declan Rice equalized in the 74th minute from the edge of the penalty area.
Despite the draw, it was a significant result for Manchester United given their struggles this season, and Amorim praised his team’s performance after the match.
However, goalkeeper Andre Onana faced criticism, particularly from former Manchester United defender Gary Neville. Neville criticized Onana for a late save where he pushed the ball into the path of Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli, creating a clear scoring chance that Martinelli ultimately missed.
“Gabriel Martinelli is disappointed, but he will be relieved that the offside flag was raised. But Andre Onana’s goalkeeping there was really poor,” Neville commented on Sky Sports.

Man Utd Targets Blackburn Goalkeeper Aynsley Pears
This is not the first instance of Onana facing criticism this season. The goalkeeper has been under scrutiny from the media and fans alike for several errors.
Currently, Altay Bayindir is the only player competing with him for the starting goalkeeper position. However, according to journalist Alan Nixon, Amorim is interested in bringing in more competition this summer by signing Blackburn goalkeeper Aynsley Pears.
Nixon reports that United wants to add a “homegrown keeper to their squad” for the 2025/26 season, and Pears is on their list of potential signings. Manchester United has reportedly sent former goalkeeper and scout Tony Coton to assess Pears, seeking a “seasoned professional” who can “compete for the number one slot” at Old Trafford.
Pears, whose father, Stephen Pears, played for Manchester United from 1979 to 1985, has played in all but one of Blackburn’s 36 Championship matches this season, achieving 13 clean sheets.
However, Manchester United fans hoping Pears will be more reliable than Onana might want to reconsider. Last April, Pears scored a notable own goal in a 3-1 loss to Sheffield Wednesday, miskicking a clearance into his own net.
