Manchester City Looking to Sign Elite Striker as Haaland Rival
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is likely eagerly anticipating the January transfer window as the club looks to bolster its squad. City have struggled recently, winning just once in December, with issues dating back to earlier in the season when key midfielder Rodri suffered a serious injury.
While replacing Rodri remains a priority, City may also be in the market for a striker to provide competition for Erling Haaland. The Norwegian forward has seen a dip in form lately after a blistering start to the season.
According to reports, Lille striker Jonathan David is on City’s radar as a potential signing. The Canadian international has been in excellent form for Lille, scoring 17 goals in 26 matches across all competitions this season.
David’s contract with Lille expires in 6 months, which could allow City to sign him for a reduced fee. However, the French club has stated they do not want to sell the striker.
Bringing in David could provide much-needed competition for Haaland, who has struggled with fitness issues due to a heavy workload. After scoring 10 goals in his first 5 Premier League games this season, Haaland has netted just 3 times in the league since.
The 24-year-old David has impressive stats, ranking in the top 2% for goals per 90 minutes (0.86) among forwards in Europe’s top 5 leagues over the past year. His clinical finishing and intelligent movement could make him an ideal fit for Guardiola’s system.
While Haaland remains City’s undisputed first-choice striker, signing a player of David’s caliber could push the Norwegian to regain his best form. It remains to be seen if City will make a move in January, but adding competition up front appears to be on their agenda as they look to get their title defense back on track.
