Manchester City May Regret Selling Rising Star Now Worth More Than Marmoush
Manchester City are nearing the end of their most successful era in club history. Since 2017, they have claimed 6 Premier League titles, 2 FA Cups, 4 League Cups, and the 2023 Champions League under Pep Guardiola’s leadership.
Despite enduring his toughest season as manager, Guardiola recently signed a 2-year contract extension. The FA Cup remains City’s only chance at silverware this season, but securing a top-5 finish and Champions League qualification is the priority.
City spent around £190 million on four players in January to usher in a new era, including £59 million on Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt. Marmoush has impressed early on, scoring 4 goals in 7 Premier League appearances including a hat-trick against Newcastle.
However, City may rue selling Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid last summer for £82 million. The Argentine has thrived in Spain, scoring 23 goals in 44 matches across all competitions. His market value has now doubled to around £105 million according to CIES Football Observatory.
While City made a huge profit on Alvarez, his departure may prove costly given their struggles this season. The 25-year-old’s creativity and goal-scoring ability could have been valuable assets for Guardiola’s side. Selling Alvarez may go down as one of City’s biggest transfer mistakes in recent years.
