Manchester City’s Struggles Continue in Premier League

Manchester City’s recent form in the Premier League has been concerning, with their latest setback coming against Brentford. Despite leading 2-0 until the 80th minute, City conceded two late goals, resulting in a draw. This disappointing result extends the club’s worst run in recent years.

Manager Pep Guardiola, who recently renewed his contract with the club, is experiencing his most challenging period since joining in 2016. In the last 17 matches, City has lost nine, drawn four, and won only four. This poor run of form has significantly impacted their standing in both domestic and European competitions.

The defending Premier League champions now find themselves in sixth place, trailing leaders Liverpool by 12 points. This gap could potentially increase to 15 points if Liverpool wins their game in hand. City’s focus may now shift to securing a Champions League spot, as they are just two points away from the qualifying positions.

In the Champions League, City’s situation is equally precarious. They currently occupy the 22nd position in the European rankings, which puts their qualification for the knockout stages at risk. Their upcoming match against PSG at the Parc des Princes on January 22nd could be crucial, as a loss might lead to their elimination from the competition.

While Manchester City still has opportunities to improve their position in both the Premier League and Champions League, it’s unusual to see a team that has dominated these competitions struggling to compete at their usual level by December. The team’s next challenges include home games against Everton on December 26th and an away match at Leicester City on December 29th, both part of the traditional Boxing Day fixtures.
