Manchester United Could Replace Eriksen with 19-Year-Old Academy Star Impressing Amorim
Manchester United’s comfortable 3-0 victory over struggling Leicester City marked another proud day for the club’s academy, as 18-year-old fullback Harry Amass made his senior debut as a second-half substitute.
Manager Ruben Amorim, who also handed a debut to Chido Obi against Tottenham last month, is continuing Erik ten Hag’s policy of promoting youth talent. However, Amorim is selective in giving opportunities, following Ten Hag’s belief that academy players must earn their place rather than being gifted one.
With financial constraints potentially limiting transfer activity, Amorim may look to the youth ranks for reinforcements – particularly to find a successor for the aging Christian Eriksen.
Eriksen, who joined United on a free transfer in 2022, has made 99 appearances for the club. While he has been a valuable asset, particularly in Ten Hag’s first season, his role has become more peripheral recently. With his contract expiring this summer, it seems likely he will depart.
Academy sensation Jack Moorhouse could potentially step up as Eriksen’s successor. The 19-year-old midfielder has impressed Amorim with his ball-carrying ability, drawing comparisons to Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers. Moorhouse has scored three times in nine U21 games for United, typically playing as an attacking midfielder or on the left flank.
Despite a recent 431-day injury absence, Moorhouse is now fit and pushing for first-team involvement. Broadcaster Nathan Murphy claims the teenager is highly rated at Carrington, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him make his debut soon, following in the footsteps of Amass and Obi.
While Eriksen has been a solid servant for United, the time may be right for a changing of the guard, with young talents like Moorhouse ready to step up and make their mark in the first team.
