Manchester United’s 17-Year-Old Wonderkid Could Outshine Tel and Obi-Martin
While Manchester United pursued Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel in January, they may already have an even more promising young talent in their academy. 17-year-old winger Shea Lacey is drawing comparisons to Phil Foden and could become United’s next homegrown star.
Lacey has impressed for United’s youth teams when healthy, registering 5 goals and 7 assists in 28 appearances for the U18s and U19s. His playing style mirrors Foden’s, with excellent close control, dribbling ability, and a knack for cutting inside onto his left foot.
Though injuries have limited his playing time, Lacey showed his potential with a standout cameo in the UEFA Youth League against FK Zalgiris. In just 22 minutes, he created two chances, completed four dribbles, and provided an assist.
United’s academy also features striker Chido Obi-Martin, who has 37 goals in 26 U18 Premier League appearances. However, Lacey’s ability to change games with moments of magic could make him an even more exciting prospect for the future.
By developing Lacey rather than pursuing expensive transfers like Tel, United may have their next homegrown superstar already in their ranks. His progress will be one to watch closely in the coming years.
