Marcello Lippi Reflects on Juventus, Italian Football, and His Legendary Career

Marcello Lippi, the iconic former coach of Juventus and the Italian national team, recently shared his thoughts on various aspects of his career and the current state of Italian football in an interview with DAZN.

Regarding Juventus, Lippi acknowledged the club’s new direction, stating, “Juventus has embarked on a new journey that requires time – a luxury often not afforded to top clubs like Juve, Inter, and Milan who are constantly vying for leadership positions.”

When asked about current Juventus coach Thiago Motta, Lippi expressed, “Motta is undoubtedly a capable, focused, and dedicated coach. However, following Allegri, I had anticipated seeing a figure who could more effectively energize the fan base.”

Lippi also touched on player management, drawing from his own experiences: “I’ve encountered similar situations before. My approach has always been to extend trust even to players who may not have deserved it at that moment, based on their past contributions.”

Discussing the current landscape of Italian coaching, Lippi remarked, “It’s challenging to pinpoint the best Italian coach, as there are two or three standout figures. However, Simone Inzaghi and Antonio Conte are certainly among them. Inzaghi, in particular, has gained significant respect. When you consistently achieve important results, you naturally build confidence and assurance.”

Reflecting on his 2006 World Cup victory with Italy, Lippi humbly stated, “I don’t see myself as having made history, but rather as having participated in it, alongside all those who helped us achieve our numerous victories. That World Cup was truly remarkable. One of the key factors in our success was the exceptional group we formed, both in terms of technical skill and personal character. I wouldn’t have wanted to be without any of those individuals.”
