Marciniak Selected to Officiate Critical Germany-Italy Encounter

UEFA has announced that Polish referee Szymon Marciniak will be in charge of the crucial Nations League quarter-final second leg between Germany and Italy. The match is set to take place at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund on Sunday evening.

Germany holds a slim advantage after their 2-1 victory in Milan, where they came from behind to defeat Italy. With no away goals rule in effect, Italy must win by at least one goal to force extra time and potentially penalties.

Marciniak will be supported by assistant referees Tomasz Listkiewicz and Adam Kupsik, with Pawel Raczkowski serving as the fourth official. Video Assistant Referee duties will be handled by fellow Poles Pawel Pskit and Tomasz Kwiatkowski.

The 44-year-old Marciniak has a less than favorable history officiating Italian national team matches. Under his watch, Italy has managed just one draw and suffered two defeats. These include a 3-1 friendly loss to Belgium in 2015, a goalless draw with England in the 2022 Nations League, and most recently, a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland that eliminated Italy from EURO 2024.

Marciniak’s record with Italian clubs is similarly mixed, having overseen 13 wins, 12 draws, and 16 losses across various competitions. His most recent controversy involving an Italian side came last month when he sent off AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez for simulation during a Champions League playoff match against Feyenoord.

As both teams prepare for this high-stakes encounter, all eyes will be on Marciniak to ensure fair and consistent officiating in what promises to be an intense battle for a spot in the Nations League semi-finals.
