Maresca Should Consider Selling Underperforming £30M Chelsea Midfielder
Chelsea are currently in contention for a Champions League spot next season, highlighting the positive impact manager Enzo Maresca has had in his first year in charge. The Italian took over last summer, aiming to build on the foundation laid by Mauricio Pochettino and potentially win a trophy this campaign.
The Blues remain in the Europa Conference League, facing Legia Warsaw in the quarter-finals as they pursue Maresca’s first trophy with the club. However, Chelsea have struggled recently in the Premier League, losing three of their last five matches. They will need to regroup after the international break to maintain their top-four position.
Regardless of this season’s final outcome, some players may be moved on this summer after failing to make a positive impression. Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and striker Christopher Nkunku have both underperformed since their big-money transfers last year. But there’s another player who Maresca should seriously consider selling due to his lack of impact.
Chelsea’s Disappointing £30M Signing
Midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall joined Chelsea from Leicester City last summer for around £30 million. However, the 26-year-old has failed to live up to expectations so far. He’s made just nine Premier League appearances this season, with only one start. Dewsbury-Hall has struggled to break into Maresca’s plans, mostly featuring in the Conference League.
Despite scoring in Chelsea’s last European match, Dewsbury-Hall hasn’t done enough to earn a regular starting spot. His Premier League stats highlight his disappointing performances:
- 9 appearances
- 1 goal/assist
- 87% pass accuracy
- 0.8 chances created per 90 minutes
- 33% dribble success rate
- 44% duels won
While Dewsbury-Hall has shown quality in the past, he’s been unable to replicate that form at Chelsea. With the club’s heavy spending, some players were bound to underperform. However, the midfielder stands out as one of their worst recent transfers.
Maresca should strongly consider selling Dewsbury-Hall this summer to recoup some of the transfer fee and reinvest in other areas of the squad. The player reportedly garnered interest from other clubs in January, so Chelsea may have an opportunity to move him on and strengthen elsewhere.
