Marseille Aims to Secure Valentin Rongier’s Future at the Club
Despite recent additions to Olympique de Marseille’s midfield, the club is keen to retain Valentin Rongier (30) for the long term. The arrival of Ismaël Bennacer on loan from AC Milan has not diminished the team’s interest in keeping their experienced midfielder.
Marseille’s sporting director, Medhi Benatia, has expressed a strong desire to initiate contract extension talks with Rongier in the near future. Benatia emphasized the player’s importance to the team’s balance and the high regard in which he is held by the coaching staff.
“We plan to start discussions with Valentin Rongier and his representatives soon. He’s a player I admire greatly, and the coach consistently highlights his crucial role in maintaining team equilibrium,” Benatia stated.
Manager Robert De Zerbi shares this sentiment, seeing Rongier as an integral part of the squad’s future plans. Since recovering from a knee injury, the French midfielder has been a consistent presence in the team, participating in the last eight Ligue 1 matches. Notably, Rongier has already scored two league goals this season, surpassing his previous season totals for Marseille.
Benatia further praised Rongier’s attitude and behavior, describing them as invaluable assets to the team. He believes the midfielder still has much to contribute to the club’s success.
Rongier, who joined Marseille in September 2019 on a five-year contract, is currently tied to the club until June 2026. The proposed contract extension discussions underscore the club’s commitment to securing his services for an even longer period.
