Marseille Coach Imposes Team-Wide Punishment After Disappointing Reims Defeat
Olympique de Marseille’s Champions League aspirations took a significant hit following their 3-1 defeat to Stade de Reims on Saturday. The loss resulted in OM slipping to third place in Ligue 1, behind AS Monaco.
Head coach Roberto De Zerbi, deeply dissatisfied with his team’s performance, implemented immediate disciplinary measures upon their return to Marseille. Instead of allowing players to go home after landing at Marignane airport, De Zerbi mandated that the entire squad spend the night at the La Commanderie training facility.
Furthermore, the coaching staff announced the cancellation of scheduled rest days on Sunday and Monday. The team was instructed to resume training immediately in an effort to address issues and regain focus.
Despite the setback, Marseille still maintains a position in Ligue 1’s top three, which could potentially secure Champions League qualification. However, their lead over fourth-placed Nice has narrowed to just two points, following Monaco’s 2-1 victory in the Côte d’Azur Derby.
De Zerbi’s team will face their next challenge at home against Toulouse at the Stade Vélodrome in the coming weekend, where they will aim to bounce back from this disappointing result.
