Marseille’s Pau López Joins Mexican Club Toluca on Loan

Olympique de Marseille has announced that their goalkeeper Pau López, aged 30, has been loaned to Mexican club Deportivo Toluca. The agreement includes an option for Toluca to make the transfer permanent at the conclusion of the season for an unspecified amount.

López, who was Marseille’s primary goalkeeper in the previous season, found his prospects at the club diminishing, especially after the acquisition of Gerónimo Rulli from Ajax. He spent the current season on loan at Girona, his hometown club, but struggled to secure regular playing time.

The Spanish goalkeeper nearly made a return to French football earlier this year when RC Lens was in search of a new keeper. The club had even gone as far as to announce López as their new signing. However, the transfer fell through due to complications with Girona’s loan agreement, which could only be terminated after the Champions League group stage.

This move to Toluca represents a new chapter in López’s career, offering him the opportunity for more consistent playing time in the Mexican league.
