Marseille’s Rongier Remains Optimistic Despite Monaco Setback
Following Olympique de Marseille’s 3-0 defeat to AS Monaco on Saturday, midfielder Valentin Rongier has called for his teammates to maintain their focus on securing Champions League qualification.
In a post-match interview, Rongier expressed his disappointment with the result, stating, “We’re obviously frustrated and upset. This was a chance to beat a direct competitor for Champions League qualification.”
The loss has pushed Marseille back to third place in the league standings, after briefly occupying the runner-up position following their win against Toulouse FC last weekend. However, Rongier remains optimistic about the team’s prospects, emphasizing, “We still control our own fate.”
With only five matches left in the season, Marseille will be looking to reverse their recent poor form, having lost five of their last seven games. The team currently holds a slim two-point lead over Lille OSC and RC Strasbourg Alsace, who occupy fourth and fifth place respectively.
Marseille’s advantage could potentially shrink to just one point if their rivals Olympique Lyonnais manage to defeat AJ Auxerre in their upcoming match. As the season reaches its climax, Rongier’s rallying cry serves as a reminder that Marseille’s Champions League aspirations are still very much alive.
