Medvedev and La Liga Representative Discuss Superliga Project
Alexander Medvedev, chairman of Zenit’s board, and Jaime Blanco, director of La Liga’s club office, engaged in a discussion about the Superliga project during a business breakfast at the Winline Winter RPL Cup.
Medvedev inquired about the future of the Champions League if the Superliga gains significant support, given the European Commission’s approval for the competition. He also questioned how the financial aspect would change if the Superliga were to accumulate 5 or 10 billion instead of 2 billion.
In response, Blanco expressed his limited knowledge of the Superliga, describing it as an ambitious and elitist project. He pointed out that the Superliga has already proposed three different models, which he found unconvincing. Blanco emphasized that European football relies heavily on national leagues, and a closed league system would disrupt the existing structure.
Blanco raised concerns about the Superliga’s proposed free TV model, contrasting it with the current TV contract-based system in European football. He also highlighted the importance of considering fan preferences, noting that while many viewers enjoy watching high-profile matches, loyal supporters prefer to follow their own teams.
The La Liga representative concluded by stressing that UEFA needs to establish clear criteria for competitions, taking into account the diverse interests of fans across Europe. He noted that the primary TV market in Europe, English fans, are not interested in the Superliga concept.
