Memphis Depay Causes Controversy in Brazil
Dutch footballer Memphis Depay has stirred up controversy in Brazil with his on-field antics. During the 90th minute of the Campeonato Paulista final second leg, the Corinthians forward performed a contentious skill move that led to a heated confrontation between players. In response, the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) issued a statement prohibiting such actions, to which Depay publicly responded.
The incident occurred when Depay stood on top of the ball near the corner flag, attempting to waste time. A Palmeiras player committed a foul to stop the play, resulting in a tense scuffle between the teams.
Days after the match, the CBF released an official statement announcing that standing on the ball with both feet – as Depay had done – would now be penalized. Referees who witness this action are instructed to award an indirect free kick to the opposing team and show a yellow card to the offending player.
Depay responded to the CBF’s decision on social media, calling it absurd. He expressed his disappointment, stating that he came to Brazil to experience the ‘jogo bonito’ (beautiful game) firsthand. The Dutch striker argued that football should not have such limitations and that the focus should be on rules that improve the sport and its commercial aspects, benefiting clubs, fans, and players alike.
Despite the controversy, Depay’s Corinthians team emerged victorious in the 2025 Campeonato Paulista final, defeating Palmeiras with an aggregate score of 1-0.
