Official news has arrived: Inter and Milan, having taken the necessary time to resolve a clause issue, have presented the Docfap, the feasibility document that will allow the two Milanese clubs to purchase the San Siro stadium and the surrounding areas of the Giuseppe Meazza facility. The two clubs aim to complete the acquisition by July of this year.
ISSUE RESOLVED – This fulfills the wish of Milan’s Mayor Giuseppe Sala, who, after an hour-long meeting yesterday, was awaiting an official proposal from the two Milanese clubs. Following the summit at Palazzo Marino, representatives from Oaktree and RedBird (President Paolo Scaroni and top manager Beppe Bonomi were present for Milan, while Carlo Ligori and Katherine Ralph represented Inter) reached an agreement on the clause that would define the consequences if one of the two clubs were to withdraw. This issue, resolved by Inter and Milan in the last 24 hours, allowed for the official submission of the feasibility document to the Milan municipal administration.
DOCUMENT DETAILS – The documentation for the 70,000-seat stadium project, which the Municipality will now fully analyze, includes all details regarding the volumes involved, the final cost for the clubs (over a billion euros), the environmental impact, and how they intend to repurpose parts of the current San Siro – according to recent reports, only the Curva Sud and the tribune to its right would remain. By submitting all the documentation today, the two clubs aim to complete the process before the 70-year protection period of the second ring (built in 1955) begins.
NEXT STEPS – The stages of the process from this point forward involve the Municipality instructing the practice following the submission of the feasibility document. Subsequently, the matter passes to the service conference, which should conclude with the declaration of public interest. It is worth noting that if the Docfap had not been submitted, Palazzo Marino would have been ready to announce a tender for the sale of the Meazza stadium and its areas, which, in any case, must maintain their sporting function, as decided by the major urban function outlined in the territorial governance plan. Construction work is likely to begin by 2027 and conclude by 2030.
MAROTTA’S CONFIRMATION – During the pre-match of the Champions League game against Feyenoord, Inter’s president Giuseppe Marotta confirmed the club’s position and the shared future with Milan to Sky Sport: “Some legal details between Milan and Inter needed to be defined, but nothing serious; we have decided to purchase the stadium and adjacent areas. This is an important step for the clubs because it will lead to the progress of these areas. We must thank Oaktree; there will certainly be a new stadium in line with modern stadium standards. For Italian clubs, stadiums represent a gap compared to Europe, and we in Milan want to be the first to set an example for other Italian clubs. The government has promised an ad hoc commissioner for this reason, and as a football man, I am proud of this progress.”
JOINT STATEMENT FROM MILAN AND INTER – The project feasibility document for the construction of the new stadium in San Siro and the redevelopment of the adjacent area was submitted today to the Milan Municipal Administration.
“AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano submitted the DOCFAP to the Municipality of Milan today, containing the proposal for the acquisition of the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium and surrounding areas, along with the project feasibility hypothesis for the construction of a state-of-the-art stadium, integrated into an urban regeneration project, in the spirit of innovation, sustainability, and accessibility.
A proposal developed by leading professionals and industry experts, resulting from the strategic vision of the two Club owners, which lays the foundation for the implementation of a project that will be an international benchmark and bring significant benefits to the city of Milan and its citizens. In the coming months, the two Clubs will engage with the Municipal Administration to share and delve into the details and distinctive elements of the proposal, with the aim of completing the acquisition procedure by July 2025.
The final concept and executive project will be presented at a later stage and are therefore not the subject of the documentation presented today.”
MUNICIPALITY’S NOTE – “The Municipality of Milan has today received the Project Alternative Feasibility Document (DOCFAP) and the related purchase offer for the San Siro stadium and the reference area from AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano. The Municipal Administration will examine the submitted documentation and then proceed with the administrative procedure.”
